I can easily imagine in a big extended family not everyone is at every memorial or knows who was buried or scattered where 20 years ago. They may all live in different places. If this urn was part of another dead relative's estate and someone leaped to conclusions about where it came from, that could get cemented as a family story pretty quickly.
